Why Our Packaging Matters at Happy Houseplants

When you order a plant online, the first impression isn’t the foliage — it’s the box arriving at your door. For us, packaging isn’t an afterthought. It’s part of the experience, part of our identity, and part of our commitment to creating living spaces with honesty and care.
We’ve spent years refining our packaging to strike the balance we believe in: beautiful, sustainable, protective and genuinely fit for purpose.
Our boxes are made from strong, recyclable cardboard using water-based inks, and printed with a botanical design that feels more like a warm welcome than a delivery. We wanted them to reflect the same feeling you get from opening a parcel of something alive and carefully grown — not something disposable. The boxes are double-walled for strength, because plants deserve to arrive in the best condition possible, whatever the weather or the courier throws at them.

We also design and test every element ourselves. We’ve learnt how to keep foliage safe in transit, how to cushion pots without plastic, and how to create packaging that protects the plant without overwhelming it. It’s taken time, a lot of trial and error, and more than a few prototypes, but the end result is something we’re genuinely proud of.
And because Happy Houseplants is a family business, our packaging naturally reflects our values. Our home, our shop and our workspace are all full of plants — children, pets, friends and daily life moving around them — and we wanted our boxes to carry a little of that feeling. Something practical, honest and quietly beautiful. Something that makes people feel they’re receiving more than a product.

Customers tell us they keep the boxes for storage, moving house, craft projects or simply because they’re too nice to throw away. We take that as the highest compliment. Good packaging should feel considered, not wasteful.
For us, it’s another small way we can help create living spaces — from the moment your plant arrives at the door.
