Houseplants for Mothers Day

A mother's love is a unique and powerful bond between a mother and her child. It is often considered unconditional, meaning it exists regardless of the circumstances and without expecting anything in return.

A mother's love is often characterized by its depth and intensity. It can inspire feelings of comfort, security, and belonging in a child and can provide a foundation of emotional support that lasts a lifetime. Even as children grow and become adults, the love they receive from their mothers can continue to play an essential role in shaping their sense of self and relationships with others.

Mother's Day in the UK, also known as Mothering Sunday, is a holiday that is celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Lent. The origins of Mother's Day in the UK can be traced back to the 16th century when it was traditional for people to return to their "mother church" on this day. This practice evolved over time to include a celebration of mothers and motherhood. By the 19th century, Mothering Sunday had become a popular occasion for giving gifts and showing appreciation to mothers.

In the UK, Mother's Day is a day for expressing love and gratitude to mothers, grandmothers, and other maternal figures in our lives. It is a time to reflect on mothers' hard work and sacrifices to raise their children and recognise their essential role in our lives.

One popular tradition on Mother's Day in the UK is giving flowers and cards. Many people give their mothers a bouquet of fresh flowers, such as roses, tulips, or daffodils, which are in season during the springtime. In recent years, houseplants have replaced flowers as a more sustainable and longer-lasting gift. Whether through gifts, cards, or simply spending quality time together, this day is a reminder of mothers' important role in our lives and a chance to show them how much they are loved and valued.

As we approach Mother's Day in the UK, we have put together a selection of houseplants that make perfect gifts for mums of all ages and interests. Whether your mum is a seasoned green thumb or just starting with plant care, we have something for everyone.

One popular option for Mother's Day is the classic Begonia. These beautiful plants come in beautiful colours and are easy to care for, and can last for months with the proper care, making them a great, long-lasting gift for any mum.

Angel Wing Begonias are popular because they are hardy, the flowers are long-lived and they grow in shade so make ideal houseplants. The secret to keeping them flowering regularly is access to good indirect light and regular light waterings. They enjoy being damp but hate being in waterlogged soil. Imagine the roots need to breathe and you won't go far wrong.

If your mum is a fan of succulents, we have a range of beautiful and unusual varieties to choose from. These low-maintenance plants come in various shapes and colours, from delicate rosettes to spiky cacti. They are perfect for adding a touch of green to any space.

And for mums who love to relax and unwind, we recommend a selection of calming and air-purifying plants, like syngoniums or peace lilies.

A string of Hearts or Ceropegia woodii has many common names, including chain of hearts, the collar of hearts, rosary vine, hearts-on-a-string, and sweetheart vine. Beautiful delicate heart-shaped leaves make it the perfect houseplant for mothers day.

We absolutely love the whole shape and fabulous foliage on this purple houseplant! Tradescantia pallida 'Purpurea' (Purple Heart) is a species of spiderwort. The gorgeous colour makes it a perfect gift for mum.

We love this unusual and hard-to-find Anthurium - it has that jungle look! The leaves of the Anthurium Clarinervium are large, dark green (almost black), heart-shaped and have a beautiful velvet texture.

Aglaonema Pink Star is a slow-growing plant, reaching a maximum height of 2-3 feet, and features distinctive pink and green leaves with a metallic sheen. The leaves are long and narrow, growing up to 8 inches in length, and are arranged alternately on the stem. The plant produces tiny, white spathes that bloom in the spring and summer, adding a delicate touch of colour to the foliage.

Maranta Leuconeura Marisela is a unique and beautiful plant that will impress any enthusiast. This plant, also known as the "prayer plant," is characterized by its striking foliage and unique ability to fold its leaves at night, resembling praying hands called nyctinasty. During the day, the leaves open up to absorb sunlight and photosynthesize. However, when the sun goes down, the leaves fold up, which is thought to be a protective mechanism to conserve moisture and prevent damage from cooler temperatures and dew.

Pink Tradescantia Nanouk, also known as the Fantasy Venice, is a herbaceous perennial plant belonging to the Commelinaceae family. It is a relatively new cultivar developed through selective breeding in the horticultural industry. It is a hybrid of Tradescantia albiflora and Tradescantia fluminensis. The plant is native to Central and South America and grows as an epiphyte or on the forest floor.
