Spider Plant (Chlorophytum comosum) Care Guide
The Spider Plant is one of the most cheerful, good-natured houseplants you can welcome into a home. With its fountain of green and cream leaves and its little star-shaped plantlets dangling like comets, it brings movement and life to a room without asking for much in return. At Happy Houseplants, we’ve always found Spider Plants to be wonderfully steady companions — forgiving when life gets busy, and rewarding when light and water fall into a simple rhythm.

It is also one of those plants people remember from childhood kitchens or school classrooms — often living happily on the same shelf for years, quietly multiplying. Many of ours send out so many baby plants that we end up sharing them with friends and neighbours.

Spider Plant light
Spider Plants thrive in bright indirect light but adapt well to softer light in typical UK rooms. Too much direct sun can scorch the leaves, while low light may soften the striping. We find they look their brightest and happiest when placed in a room that fills with daylight rather than direct beams.
Spider Plant watering
Let the top of the soil dry before watering again. Spider Plants like even moisture but never want to sit in water. Brown tips are famously common in UK homes due to minerals in tap water and central heating — nothing to panic about and not a sign of poor care. If it bothers you, resting tap water overnight can help.
Spider Plant humidity
Average home humidity is perfect. No need to mist. Just keep it away from radiators in winter to avoid crisp edges.
Spider Plant temperature
A steady temperature between fifteen and twenty four degrees suits them well. Avoid cold draughts and very warm spots near heaters. Spider Plants tolerate small fluctuations but prefer to avoid sudden drops.
Spider Plant soil and repotting
Use a free draining indoor mix. Spider Plants grow quickly and can become snug in their pots. Repot every one or two years in spring, sizing up gently. They enjoy being a little root-bound but eventually reward a new pot with a burst of growth.
Spider Plant feeding
Feed every two to four weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser. Rest feeding in winter.
Spider Plant pet safety
Spider Plants are non toxic and safe around pets and curious children, which is why so many families choose them as a first plant.

Spider Plant pests
Mealybugs and aphids occasionally appear on young shoots, especially during spring flushes. Regularly checking the underside of leaves helps catch things early.
