SYBASoil Universal Houseplant Mix (5L)
- In stock, ready to ship
- Inventory on the way
This is Sybotanica’s universal houseplant mix, designed as an unspecialised, all-purpose soil that works well for most common houseplants. It’s ideal for spring repotting, refreshing tired soil, or potting on plants that have outgrown their containers, especially if you want one dependable mix rather than several specialist composts.
The Universal Mix is peat-free and made using natural, well balanced ingredients. It’s intended to be easy to live with. You can use it straight from the bag for most houseplants, or treat it as a base mix and adapt it slightly if certain plants prefer drier or airier conditions.
At its core, this is a practical houseplant soil that balances moisture retention with good airflow around the roots. It holds enough water to support active growth after repotting, while staying open enough to avoid compaction over time. That balance makes it particularly useful when repotting houseplants in spring, as plants are starting to grow again and need consistent conditions to settle quickly.
The mix includes coco coir, perlite and fresh worm castings, along with smaller amounts of activated carbon, lava gravel and organic fertilisers. Because worm castings are a natural ingredient, this is a living soil. Very occasionally you may notice a small worm when opening the bag, which is completely normal and simply reflects how fresh the ingredients are.
We’re stocking the 5L size, which is a practical option for home repotting, topping up pots and general seasonal plant care.
What plants is this mix suitable for?
The SYBASoil Universal Mix works well for most everyday houseplants, including Monstera, Philodendron and Pothos, Ficus varieties, Spider plants, Peace lilies, ZZ plants, Dracaena, Hoya and smaller Calathea.
It offers enough moisture retention for plants that like evenly moist soil, while still drying out gradually between waterings. For plants that prefer sharper drainage, such as succulents or cacti, this mix works well as a base with extra perlite or grit added.
When is the best time to repot houseplants?
Spring is generally the best time to repot most houseplants. As days lengthen and light levels increase, plants move into active growth and recover more easily from repotting. Fresh soil at this point supports stronger root development and more consistent growth through spring and summer.
That said, repotting can be done at other times of year if needed. Signs a plant may need repotting include roots growing out of the pot, soil drying very quickly, the plant becoming top heavy, or roots pushing the plant upwards.
How to use the Universal Mix
Use straight from the bag, or adjust depending on the plant. Water only once the top 2–3cm of soil feels dry. Allowing the surface to dry slightly encourages roots to grow deeper, while the lower soil layers retain moisture for longer.
It’s fine if the soil dries out a little more occasionally. This mix is forgiving and designed to cope with real-life watering habits.
Feeding plants after repotting
Fresh soil provides nutrients, but plants will still benefit from gentle feeding once they’ve settled. We recommend waiting a few weeks after repotting, then using a mild, balanced feed such as our Happy Houseplants Organic Tropical Plant Food. It supports steady growth without pushing plants too hard and works well alongside peat-free mixes like this one.
A note on safety
As with most potting mixes, this soil isn’t designed to be ingested and should be kept out of reach of pets and children.
Houseplant Potting & SYBASoil UK FAQs
Is SYBASoil available in the UK?
Yes. We stock the SYBASoil Universal Houseplant Mix in the UK in the 5L size.
Is this the same mix sold by Sybotanica?
Yes. The formula is the same peat-free, bioactive universal mix produced by Sybotanica. Packaging may vary as designs are updated, but the soil itself remains the same.
How long does SYBASoil stay fresh?
Stored sealed in a cool, dark place, it stays usable for around two years. Nutrients may naturally reduce over time, but adding fresh worm castings can easily refresh the mix.
Do I need different soil for different houseplants?
Not necessarily. This universal mix works well for most houseplants. More specialist plants may benefit from small adjustments, but many growers prefer one reliable base soil and adapt from there.
