The African Milk Tree, Euphorbia trigona ‘Rubra’, is a bold, sculptural houseplant that instantly brings structure and character into a space. Its upright, ridged stems are edged with small thorns and flushed with deep burgundy red tones, giving it a strong architectural look that feels both modern and natural. Although often mistaken for a cactus, it is actually a succulent, storing water in its stems and thriving with very little fuss.

This is a plant that makes an impact without demanding attention. Its vertical growth adds height and presence, making it ideal for styling corners or adding contrast amongst softer leafy plants. The rich colouring and unusual form give it a slightly wild, desert inspired feel that works beautifully in contemporary interiors.

Size
Pot size: approximately 21cm
Plant height: approximately 80cm tall
Each plant is naturally unique, so shape and branching may vary slightly.

Native habitat and growth pattern
Euphorbia trigona is native to Central Africa, where it grows in bright, dry conditions and develops tall, water storing stems to cope with long periods without rain. Indoors, it grows steadily upright, forming branching columns over time and creating a strong, sculptural silhouette that becomes more impressive as it matures.

Styling at home
The African Milk Tree works brilliantly as a statement plant in bright rooms, home offices, or open living spaces. Its upright form adds height without taking up too much floor space, and it pairs especially well with softer, leafy plants to create contrast. It also suits minimalist interiors where you want a single plant to act as a living design feature.

Care requirements
Light: Bright light is ideal, including some direct sun.
Water: Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Overwatering is the main thing to avoid.
Temperature: Prefers warm indoor conditions and dislikes cold, damp spaces.
Humidity: Average home humidity is fine.
Feeding: A light feed during spring and summer supports steady growth.

Why choose this plant?
If you want something striking but genuinely easy to look after, the African Milk Tree is a brilliant choice. It is resilient, long lived, and visually strong, making it perfect for busy households or anyone wanting a low maintenance statement plant.

Interesting facts
Despite its cactus like appearance, Euphorbia trigona belongs to the Euphorbia family rather than the cactus family.
The red colouring becomes more pronounced in brighter light.
Like many euphorbias, it contains a milky sap which can be irritating to skin, so handle with care.

Happy Houseplants delivers live houseplants across the UK with fast, carbon-neutral tracked service.

At Happy Houseplants, we ship all live plants via DPD’s 24-hour tracked carbon-neutral service. Delivery usually takes 7–10 working days, but in most cases your plants will arrive much sooner. You can read more about delivery here.

We post to most of the UK, but we’re unable to deliver to the Scottish Highlands and Islands, Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man, the Isle of Wight, the Scilly Isles and the Channel Islands because of higher shipping costs.

When we list a plant’s height, it always includes the grow pot, stem, foliage and living root system — not just what you see above the soil. Because every plant is unique, yours may arrive a little smaller or larger than the size listed.
