ADD A BEAUTIFUL FITTED POT (OPTIONAL)
Helleborus Christmas Carol has all the charm of an old fashioned Christmas. Beautiful white flowers with delicate pale yellow centres sit above rich green foliage, bringing a fresh, wintry feel to your festive decorating. Commonly known as the Christmas rose, it looks wonderfully at home among evergreen branches, velvet ribbons and treasured decorations, making it a lovely choice for a Victorian inspired Christmas.
There is something particularly special about a flowering plant in the middle of winter. The simple white blooms feel elegant and full of life, whether you are choosing a Christmas plant gift for someone you love or adding a little seasonal beauty to your own home.
Supplied in a 12cm nursery pot, this Christmas hellebore is a lovely size for a thoughtful gift or a small festive display. Enjoy it briefly in a cool, bright room, then give it a home outside where it can grow and flower again in future winters.

Each plant is naturally individual. Flower numbers, buds and stage of opening will vary.
Native habitat and growth pattern
Helleborus niger, the Christmas rose, comes from mountainous regions of central and southern Europe. It is adapted to cool conditions, with sturdy foliage and flowers that appear during the colder months.
Christmas Carol grows as a compact clump, gradually becoming fuller as it establishes. It is a perennial, so with suitable care it can return to flower year after year.
Despite its name, it is not a true rose. Its open white flowers simply have that same timeless beauty.
Styling at Christmas
For a Victorian inspired Christmas, pair your hellebore with an antique style planter, rich velvet ribbon and loose evergreen foliage. The white flowers look beautiful against deep green, burgundy and warm wood.
It also suits a simpler Christmas setting. A plain ceramic pot, linen tablecloth and a few favourite decorations are enough to create a lovely seasonal display.
Bring it to the table for Christmas lunch, then return it to a cool, bright position afterwards. Avoid leaving it beside a fireplace or radiator, as this winter flowering plant is much happier away from strong heat.
Outside, it makes a beautiful addition to a sheltered doorstep, courtyard or balcony, bringing flowers to a spot you pass every day.
Care guide
Light: Choose a bright position for a short indoor display, away from strong direct sun. Outdoors, a sheltered spot in partial shade is ideal.
Water: Keep the compost lightly moist, without leaving it soggy. Check regularly and water when the surface starts to feel dry. Allow excess water to drain fully and empty any decorative outer pot.
Humidity: There is no need to mist. A cool position with good airflow is more useful than extra humidity.
Temperature: This is a cool growing outdoor plant. For Christmas indoors, choose your coolest bright room and keep its stay brief, around one to two weeks rather than the whole winter.
Soil and repotting: After its festive display, plant into a larger container with drainage holes or a suitable garden border. It prefers fertile soil that holds some moisture but drains freely.
Feeding: There is no need to feed during its short Christmas display. Once established outdoors, feed in spring according to the instructions on a suitable general garden fertiliser.
After Christmas: Gradually get your plant used to outdoor temperatures again in a sheltered position. Avoid moving it straight from a warm room into a hard frost, and plant out when the ground is not frozen or waterlogged.
Why choose this plant
The Christmas rose is a beautiful choice for anyone who loves natural Christmas decorations and gifts with a life beyond the festive season.
Its white flowers and rich foliage bring a gentle, traditional feel to Christmas styling. It is especially lovely for someone who enjoys gardening, has a balcony filled with pots or would appreciate a winter flowering plant for their doorstep.
Once Christmas is over, it can become part of the garden, giving you something to look forward to when the colder months come around again.
Interesting facts
-
The Christmas rose is a hellebore, not a member of the rose family.
-
Its showy white flower parts are actually sepals, which can remain attractive as they age.
-
Older blooms may gradually develop soft green or pink tones.
-
It is a perennial plant that can flower again in future winters.
-
Flowering time depends on growing conditions, so the name does not guarantee flowers on Christmas Day.
FAQs
Q: Can I keep my Christmas hellebore indoors?
A: Yes, for a short festive display in a cool, bright position. It is an outdoor perennial rather than a permanent houseplant, so move it outside after its brief stay indoors.
Q: Is this a good Christmas plant gift?
A: It is a lovely gift for someone who enjoys flowers, gardening or traditional Christmas decorating. Include a little note explaining that it will appreciate an outdoor home after the festivities.
Q: Will it flower again next Christmas?
A: With suitable outdoor conditions, it can flower again in future winters. Exact timing varies with the weather and growing conditions.
Q: Can I grow it in a pot outside?
A: Yes. Choose a larger container with drainage holes, keep the compost from drying out completely and provide shelter from strong winds and hot summer sunshine.
Q: Does it come with a decorative pot?
A: No. Your plant comes in a 12cm nursery pot. Browse our houseplant pots collection if you would like to choose a decorative pot for its Christmas display.
Q: Is it pet safe?
A: Hellebores are harmful if eaten, so position your plant where pets and children will not nibble it. The sap can also irritate skin, so wear gloves when pruning or handling damaged foliage.
