ADD A BEAUTIFUL FITTED POT (OPTIONAL)
Platycerium bifurcatum, more commonly known as the Staghorn Fern, is one of the most distinctive hanging houseplants you can grow indoors. Unlike traditional ferns that form soft mounds of foliage, this species develops dramatic antler shaped fronds that arch and fork naturally as they mature. Suspended in a hanging pot, the plant develops a sculptural presence that feels closer to living wall art than a conventional houseplant.
What makes the Staghorn Fern so fascinating is the contrast between its different types of foliage. The long silver green fronds extend outward and downwards like antlers, while rounded shield fronds sit closer to the base of the plant, gradually layering and ageing over time. Those shield fronds often turn papery and brown with maturity, which is completely natural and part of the plant’s protective growth habit rather than a sign of decline.
This is not a man made hybrid designed purely for appearance. Platycerium bifurcatum is a true species that evolved in rainforest environments where it grows attached to trees rather than rooted into soil on the forest floor. That unusual epiphytic growth habit gives the plant much of its character indoors. It naturally wants airflow, humidity, and space to spread its foliage freely.
At this larger 50 to 60cm size, the plant already carries real impact. The fronds are established and beginning to form the layered, architectural silhouette that makes mature Staghorn Ferns so admired. Hanging specimens like this bring movement and texture into a room in a way very few foliage plants manage.
Size
Pot size approximately 21cm
Overall length around 50 to 60cm including foliage
A naturally unique plant with variation in frond length, branching, texture, and overall growth habit
Native habitat and growth pattern
Platycerium bifurcatum originates from tropical and subtropical forests across parts of Australia and New Guinea, where it grows attached to tree trunks and branches high above the forest floor. In these environments, the plant experiences filtered light, moving air, seasonal rainfall, and regular humidity without sitting in dense wet soil.
As an epiphyte, the Staghorn Fern anchors itself against bark and gradually builds up organic matter around its roots using the shield fronds at the base of the plant. These rounded basal fronds help collect fallen leaves, moisture, and nutrients in the wild while also protecting the root system beneath.
The long antler like fronds are the fertile foliage. These extend outward to capture light and release spores as the plant matures. The silvery coating often visible on the fronds helps reflect harsh sunlight and reduce moisture loss in warmer conditions.
Over time, mature plants become increasingly dramatic, with larger branching fronds layering over one another and gradually forming broad hanging specimens. Older plants can become surprisingly large indoors when given stable warmth and enough room to develop naturally.
At this stage, the plant already has established size and strong character while still continuing to mature over the years ahead.
Styling at home
Staghorn Ferns work particularly well in interiors where you want something softer and more organic than upright foliage plants. Hanging specimens naturally draw the eye upwards and introduce movement into a room without feeling heavy or overcrowded.
The silver green fronds pair beautifully with natural materials such as wood, linen, stone, terracotta, and woven textures. Because the foliage branches so freely, the plant tends to soften sharper interior lines and works especially well in calm, relaxed spaces.
This is also one of the few houseplants that genuinely suits hanging display. Positioned near a bright window or allowed to hang slightly above eye level, the fronds create depth and layered shadow throughout the day.
Mature Staghorn Ferns often become conversation pieces because the growth habit feels so unusual compared to more conventional indoor plants. Even people who are not especially interested in houseplants tend to stop and look twice.
Care requirements
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Gentle morning or evening sun is usually tolerated well, but prolonged harsh midday sun can scorch the fronds.
Water: Water when the growing medium begins to feel slightly lighter or partially dry. Staghorn Ferns prefer some airflow around the roots rather than remaining constantly saturated.
Humidity: Appreciates moderate to higher humidity, although established plants can adapt reasonably well to typical UK indoor conditions over time.
Temperature: Prefers warm indoor temperatures and should be protected from cold draughts or sudden drops in temperature.
Feeding: During spring and summer, occasional feeding helps support healthy frond development. We recommend our Organic Tropical Plant Food, designed to support leafy tropical houseplants and epiphytic species.
Avoid removing the brown shield fronds at the base of the plant. These are a normal and important part of healthy growth.
Why choose this plant
Platycerium bifurcatum offers something very different from most indoor plants. It is not about flowers or bold colour. Its appeal comes from shape, texture, and the unusual way it grows and matures over time.
At this larger hanging size, the plant already feels established and architectural without losing the softness that makes ferns so calming indoors. The branching fronds create movement and silhouette that change constantly depending on light and viewing angle.
It is also a plant that develops increasing character with age. Older specimens become fuller, broader, and more sculptural over time, gradually building the layered appearance that makes mature Staghorn Ferns so admired.
For anyone looking to add something genuinely distinctive to a room without it feeling overly formal or artificial, the Staghorn Fern occupies a very unusual and rewarding space amongst houseplants.
Interesting facts
Platycerium bifurcatum belongs to a group of ferns commonly known as Staghorn Ferns because the fertile fronds resemble antlers.
In the wild, mature specimens can grow into very large colonies attached to trees, sometimes weighing many kilograms over time.
The brown shield fronds at the base of the plant are completely natural and help protect the roots while trapping nutrients and moisture.
The silvery appearance on the fronds comes from tiny hairs that help reduce moisture loss and protect the foliage from strong sunlight.
Staghorn Ferns reproduce using spores rather than flowers or seeds, like most true ferns.
FAQs
Is the brown foliage at the base normal?
Yes. The shield fronds naturally age and turn brown over time. They help protect the plant and should not usually be removed.
Can this plant live in a hanging pot long term?
Yes. Staghorn Ferns are naturally very well suited to hanging displays and often develop beautifully this way.
Does it need high humidity?
Moderate humidity is appreciated, but stable care and good light are usually more important overall.
Is it difficult to care for?
It is generally considered fairly manageable once you understand its watering needs and epiphytic growth habit.
Can it tolerate some direct sunlight?
Gentle morning or late afternoon sun is usually fine, but strong midday sun can scorch the foliage.
Will it continue getting larger?
Yes. Mature Staghorn Ferns gradually become broader and more dramatic over time.
Is every plant identical?
No. Frond shape, branching, texture, and overall habit naturally vary from plant to plant.
