Haworthia gasterworthia is a compact, quietly beautiful succulent with thick, fleshy leaves arranged in a neat rosette. Often mistaken for Aloe or Gasteria, it combines sculptural form with exceptional tolerance of indoor conditions, making it one of the most reliable small succulents you can grow. Supplied in an 6cm pot, it’s perfectly sized for desks, shelves and small spaces.

This is a plant that stays well behaved. Growth is slow and controlled, with the rosette maintaining its tidy shape rather than stretching or sprawling. It’s ideal for people who want greenery without constant attention — a plant that settles in, holds its form, and simply gets on with things.

Its subtle textures and compact size make it especially good for grouped displays, where it adds interest without dominating.

Native habitat and growth pattern
Haworthia species originate from sheltered, rocky environments in southern Africa, where they grow protected from harsh sun. This natural preference makes them particularly well suited to indoor life.

Indoors, Haworthia gasterworthia grows slowly, sometimes producing offsets around the base over time. Leaves remain firm and upright when happy, storing moisture efficiently.

Styling at home

• Perfect for desks, shelves and windowsills
• Ideal for small ceramic pots
• Excellent in low-maintenance plant groupings
• Works well in homes with limited light

Care guide

Light requirements
Prefers bright, indirect light but tolerates lower light better than most succulents. Avoid harsh midday sun.

Watering
Water sparingly. Allow the compost to dry out fully between waterings. Overwatering is the most common cause of problems.

Feeding
Feed lightly in spring and summer, once every six to eight weeks.

Temperature
Comfortable in normal indoor temperatures. Avoid cold draughts.

Pet safety
Generally considered pet safe, making it a good choice for homes with cats or dogs.

Propagation
Produces offsets over time, which can be gently separated and replanted.

Why choose this plant?
Haworthia gasterworthia is one of those plants that quietly proves its worth. Compact, forgiving and long-lived, it’s ideal for beginners and experienced plant lovers alike — especially anyone who values calm, understated greenery.

Interesting facts

• Haworthias evolved to grow in shade rather than full sun
• Their slow growth helps them retain a neat form for years
• They’re among the most indoor-friendly succulents available

Happy Houseplants delivers live houseplants across the UK with fast, carbon-neutral tracked service.

At Happy Houseplants, we ship all live plants via DPD’s 24-hour tracked carbon-neutral service. Delivery usually takes 7–10 working days, but in most cases your plants will arrive much sooner. You can read more about delivery here.

We post to most of the UK, but we’re unable to deliver to the Scottish Highlands and Islands, Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man, the Isle of Wight, the Scilly Isles and the Channel Islands because of higher shipping costs.

When we list a plant’s height, it always includes the grow pot, stem, foliage and living root system — not just what you see above the soil. Because every plant is unique, yours may arrive a little smaller or larger than the size listed.
