ADD A BEAUTIFUL FITTED POT (OPTIONAL)

Kalanchoe Pink Butterflies is one of those little plants that makes people look twice. Its fleshy green leaves carry a beautiful soft pink hue, with delicate pink plantlets forming along the leaf edges like tiny butterflies resting there. It is unusual, cheerful and far more interesting than its compact size suggests.

This is a succulent with real personality. The pink colouring gives it a gentle, almost unreal appearance, while the scalloped leaf edges and miniature plantlets make every leaf feel detailed and individual. At around 14cm tall, it is a lovely size for a bright shelf, desk, kitchen windowsill or as a thoughtful gift for someone who enjoys plants that are a little less ordinary.

Kalanchoe Pink Butterflies is a variegated form of a plant often known as Mother of Thousands. The little pink pieces around the leaf edges are not flowers. They are tiny developing plantlets, which are what give this cultivar its wonderful butterfly like look.

Size

Pot size approximately 8.5cm
Height around 14cm

Each plant is naturally individual. The amount of pink colouring, leaf shape and number of plantlets will vary slightly.

Native habitat and growth pattern

Kalanchoes come from warm, dry regions and have evolved to store water in their thick leaves. This makes them wonderfully suited to busy homes, as they prefer the compost to dry between waterings rather than being kept constantly wet.

Pink Butterflies grows upright, gradually producing new leaves from the top of its stems. In good light, the foliage keeps its best colour and the delicate pink plantlets along the leaf margins become more noticeable.

As it matures, it may become a little taller and more architectural. If it ever grows too leggy, it can be trimmed back and allowed to branch again.

Styling at home

This is a plant that looks particularly lovely close up. Place it where its leaf detail can be properly appreciated, such as a bright desk, shelf, bedside table or kitchen windowsill.

The soft pink tones work beautifully with pale ceramics, natural wood, neutral interiors and other succulents. It also makes a brilliant little gift, especially for someone who already has the usual easy houseplants and would enjoy something rarer and more unusual.

Because it stays compact, Kalanchoe Pink Butterflies is a simple way to add colour and interest without needing much space.

Care guide

Light: Prefers a bright position with plenty of indirect light. A little gentle morning or late afternoon sunshine is welcome. Good light helps the pink variegation look its best, but avoid intense hot sun through glass for long periods.

Water: Allow the compost to dry out well between waterings. Water thoroughly, then allow excess water to drain away. This plant is much happier slightly too dry than constantly wet.

Humidity: Average household humidity is perfect. There is no need to mist it.

Temperature: Keep in a warm room between 15°C and 24°C. Protect from cold draughts and frost.

Feeding: Feed lightly during spring and summer if it is actively growing. A diluted succulent or houseplant feed is ideal.

Why choose this plant

Kalanchoe Pink Butterflies is a small plant with a lot going on. The soft pink variegation, scalloped leaves and tiny plantlets make it feel genuinely special, even on a small shelf.

It is also a very easy plant to live with. It does not need constant watering, high humidity or complicated care. Give it a bright spot and a little restraint with the watering can, and it will happily get on with being beautiful.

For gifting, it feels thoughtful and slightly unexpected. It is not just a pretty plant for a week or two. It is something unusual to look after, watch change and enjoy over time.

Interesting facts

  • The little pink butterflies around the leaf edges are developing plantlets, not flowers.

  • Kalanchoe Pink Butterflies is related to the plant commonly called Mother of Thousands.

  • Its thick leaves store moisture, helping it cope well if watering is occasionally forgotten.

  • The amount of pink variegation naturally differs from plant to plant.

  • Brighter light usually helps bring out the best colour in the foliage.

FAQs

Q: Is Kalanchoe Pink Butterflies easy to care for?
A: Yes. It is a very manageable succulent that likes a bright spot and compost that dries out between waterings.

Q: Are the pink butterflies real flowers?
A: No. They are tiny developing plantlets growing around the edge of the leaves, which is what makes this variety so unusual.

Q: How often should I water it?
A: Water only when the compost has dried out well. It is always safer to underwater slightly than to leave the roots sitting in wet compost.

Q: Will it stay pink?
A: The amount of pink varies naturally, but bright indirect light helps the foliage maintain its best colour.

Q: Is it pet safe?
A: This plant is considered toxic if eaten. Keep it away from pets and young children.
