We love the ever-popular large rubber plant (or Ficus Elastica or Robusta Abidjan) for its simplicity and tropical looks. Picture deep purple/emerald green, glossy leaves shiny enough for droplets of water to slide off….picture a large, tall houseplant standing proudly in your home, bringing a taste of the lush, wild rainforest to your hallway or your living room….the tall rubber plant has all of this and more. It’s a classic, it has stood the test of time, remaining very popular over decades, never losing its appeal. It’s one of our extra-large houseplants.

The Rubber Plant is rewarding to grow and beautiful when mature. As it thrives in areas with full sun to partial shade, it will suit any room in the house, wherever you want to add a dash of the exotic.

When growing the Ficus Abidjan indoors, avoid drafts near large windows or doors. It is native to Asia and in the wild can grow up to 60 metres tall with a trunk that can be 2 metres thick! It won’t do this in your home though, its ultimate height will be more like 2 metres in the right conditions.

Our top tip is to train your rubber tree Ficus Elastica Abidjan to be tall and leggy: its unusual shape is beautiful and casts wonderful shadows in summer. The best advice we can give is to neglect your Ficus tree a little - it will grow stronger if you only water it once the top layers of soil are dry: the worst thing you can do is to overwater - as is the case for most of our tropical houseplants. As ever, if you’re looking to buy indoor plants online then here at Happy Houseplants we provide you not only with beautiful and interesting houseplants but we hope we also inspire you with our style!

Soak up some of the rainforest every day in your home by buying wonderful houseplants from us! As an indoor plant gift this is perfect and one to impress! We’ll even include a handwritten card with your delivery for free - just add your gift message at basket stage of checkout. We won’t leave in any paperwork either!

Please note that as one of our extra large houseplants, the Rubber plant Ficus Abidjan will be hand delivered to London and the Home Counties. Please see our delivery section for more details.
